And the instructor said, "Jump, Suhaid!" As I stood on the edge of the boat, after securing masks, checking the oxygen tanks, inspecting the regulator, trusting a fellow diver, someone I had never seen before and might never cross paths with again. I close my eyes with a deep breath, I took the plunge into the unknown, guided by the words of my instructor.
Meet the breathless world: a world of colors, mysteries, and silent poetry. Vibrant coral and tiny creatures, Schools of fish- ranging from small and colorful to the larger fish like sharks swimming in unity, as sunlight filtered through the water, casting patterns on the ocean floor, the underwater world came alive. Bubbles ascended like fleeting thoughts.
All of us carry moments that are cursed to be revisited again and again for years. This journey gifted me one of those moments and will continue to captivate my mind for years on end.
Amidst the descent to 40 feet below the ocean's surface As I looked upward, it felt like the deep blue ocean went on forever, revealing a stunning view of the water's surface. The world above this is the complexities of life—family dynamics, heartbreaks, celebrations, disagreements, confident religious beliefs. A life of highs and lows all suspended the world above this water world. I thought to myself "maybe divers come down here to live a little from the frantic world above".
On the plane ride home, at 40,000 feet above, surrounded by the vastness of the sky, my thoughts resonated with a quote by Carl Sagan, "We are a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam." In that moment, I couldn't help but feel like a floating miracle. We are a miracle that floats in one of the thousands of galaxies, and it happens to be in one of the stars among the thousands of stars. And as I think to myself, what a wonderful world we live in.
